The Sparks

I’d love to tell you all that this health coaching journey began with one epiphany on a beach with an enlightening idea to transform my future. But no, my career, rather than the description as a noun of “an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life with opportunities for progress,” was always more like the word career as a verb: “move swiftly and in an uncontrolled way in a specified direction.” Now, I do not mean for that to sound self-deprecating. I look upon that description with humor and fondness. Historically, I know that each new role I undertook lost its novelty and challenge soon after the honeymoon period – to no blame of employers and organizations. Instead, I now understand this was indicative of something else stirring and pulling at me internally.

I look back with clarity at the signs now. The signs I attempted to ignore for decades. Examples include my interest in studying medicine and helping people become well from a young age; the almost switching my business degree to a psychology degree in my undergrad; the intrigue into what makes humans behave and think a certain way; the embarking on career change number ‘x’ to become a personal trainer in London; the desire to see people find their dream jobs by working in recruitment; and then in 2020, the (somewhat questionable) decision to do a master's degree in Psychology with a newborn, a two-year-old, aging parents in ill health, amidst a global pandemic. All of these signs (let’s call them sparks) have been part of a journey that has led me to this point.

These sparks don’t fit a traditional career, and there are times when I’ve felt that the lack of these sparks could have perhaps made my life and decision-making a little easier. A specialized career that leads to a more predictable trajectory has definitely paid off for some of my peers. But with each new job came new challenges, new groups of co-workers, and new workplace cultures. Understanding how to work with people in different countries, cultures and societies, at different stages of life cultivated my learning, listening, empathy, and interests. Outside of work, major life events of having children, losing a parent to an awful neurological disease, and moving countries several times, have allowed me to forge new ways of approaching life and finding new pathways.

So here I am, taking a leap, running the gauntlet, and launching my own coaching business. With my naturally fueled interest and passion for learning, moving, and getting healthier, I hope to coach and work with many amazing humans, seeing them reach new heights and more importantly, strive less and thrive more. I’ll be blogging about topics related to health and wellness - from covering trends and potential fads to strategies to ensure healthy habit formation. I’m excited and I’m open to hearing thoughts, questions, and ideas on topics you’d love to know more about too. Use the comments section below or contact me directly.
